Last week my daughter injured her ankle. Thankfully it wasn’t broken but she did have a severe sprain and contusion. This led to a week of her missing out on swimming, playing outside with her friends and just about everything else a 9 year old likes to do during the last few weeks of Summer break. While I typically limit television, nintendo, computer time and any other electronic devices to small amounts throughout the week, to encourage more active play and imagination, when the children are sick or injured, all bets are off.
Even though she was hurting, the first 2 days she really enjoyed unlimited Mario and Frozen on repeat π
and then….. she got bored. So I had to get creative π
I remembered this homemade play-doh we made a few months ago on a rainy day and even though it made a bit of a mess, my kids (ages 9 and 4) had a BLAST making and playing with it! Worked like a charm!
Homemade Play-Doh (source)
Ingredients2 cups all purpose flour2 tablespoons vegetable oil1/2 cup salt2 tablespoons cream of tartarUp to 1.5 cups boiling water (adding in increments until it feels just right)food coloringfew drops glycerin
Directions
Mix the flour, salt, cream of tartar and oil in a large mixing bowl
Add food coloring TO the boiling water then into the dry ingredients
Stir continuously until it becomes a sticky, combined dough
Add the glycerin
Allow it to cool down then take it out of the bowl and knead it vigorously for a couple of minutes until all of the stickiness has gone. This is the most important part of the process, so keep at it until itβs the perfect consistency! MY KIDS LOVED THIS PART! π
If it remains a little sticky then add a little more flour until it just feels right (We had to do this several times)
